چکیده

LTHOUGH THE FLAME PHOTOMETER jS the method of choice for the determination of serum sodium in most large, well-equipped laboratories, there remains a place for an alternative procedure which can be used in laboratories too small to afford a flame photometer, or which can be carried out by an intern, resident, or general laboratory technician at night or at other times when the photometer operator is not available. The need for such a method is reflected in the numerous papers which continue to appear describing new methods (or modifications of old ones) for assaying sodium in biologic materials. Most of these procedures are based on the precipitation of sodium as sodium uranyl zinc (or magnesium) acetate; the precipitate may be weighed (1), or the uranium in the precipitate or that remaining in the supernatant can be determined colorimetrically (2-5) or by titration (6). Other methods involve colorimetry of the sodium salt of violuric acid (7), titration of hydroxyl ions displaced from an ion exchange resin by a quantity of chloride equivalent to the sodium of the sample (8), and the very interesting determination of the volume of the erythrocytes after they have been equilibrated with several different concentrations of sodium chloride solution (9). The present method is based upon the precipitation of sodium as the sodium acid salt of -methoxypheny1acetic acid, as described by Reeve and Christoffel (10) and by Reeve (11). The precipitate has the stoichiometric composition C6H5CH(0C113)COOH. C6H5CH

A Study of the Estimation of Sodium in Blood Serum

Without doubt the most satisfactory procedure for the quantitative determination of small amounts of sodium is that involving its precipitation as uranyl zinc sodium acetate, (UO&ZnNa(CH,C00)9.6Hz0, first introduced by Barber and Kolthoff (2). Applications of this method to biological material have been numerous, since the triple salt is readily estimated by a variet,y of gravimetric, calorimet...

Volumetric overload shocks in the patho-aetiology of the Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (Turp) Syndrome and acute dilution hyponatraemia: The clinical evidence based on prospective clinical study of 100 consecutive Turp patients

Introduction and objective: Circulatory shock affecting patients with the TURP syndrome has frequently been described but has usually been mistaken for hypovolaemic blood loss, cardiogenic or septicaemic shock. Here we report a prospective study that proves the patho-aetiology of the TURP syndrome is induced by volumetric overload. Patients and methods: A prospective study of 100 consecutive pa...

مقایسه روش‌های پروتئین‌زدایی در سنجش نیتریک اکساید سرمی به روش گریس

Background: Nitric oxide (NO) is involved in numerous physiologic and phathophysiologic processes. Recently, further investigators have focused on serum NO determination. In our previous study, we validated a simple, cheap and rapid method for serum NO determination based on the Greiss reaction. Deproteinization is a necessary step for this reaction, thus, the present study was designed to asse...

Evaluating the Serum Levels of Calcium, Chloride, Potassium and Sodium in the Stroke Patients

Backgrounds and Aims: Stroke incidence rate has increased during the past 2 decades. The question of whether calcium, chloride, potassium, sodium levels are associated with stroke has remained controversial. The present study aimed to evaluate the serum levels of potassium, sodium, calcium, and chloride within stroke patients. Materials and Methods: The study participants consisted of 5...

Effect of Long-term, Low-dose Sodium Nitrate Administration on Serum Liver Enzymes Levels in Ovariectomized Rats

Introduction: High prevalence of liver disorders has been observed in postmenopausal women. This study aims at determining the effects of long-term, low-dose nitrate administration on serum levels of liver enzymes, including aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in ovariectomized rats. Materials and Methods: Female Wistar rats were divi...
